This report investigates youth agripreneurs in Benin, Ethiopia, and Senegal based on a survey of 634 individuals aged 15–35. It highlights the diversity of food-related enterprises, with most youth engaged in farming, processing, or retail. These are typically micro-businesses with modest turnover but significant employment potential. Half of the youth entered agribusiness by choice, and opportunity-driven entrepreneurs outperform those driven by necessity. Access to finance is the most common constraint, while public policy support—especially in training and market access—is widely sought. The study emphasizes the need for differentiated support policies and reaffirms agriculture as an attractive sector for youth. Although many gained skills through informal means, demand for practical training is high. Use of innovation and technology remains low, pointing to a gap between youth aspirations and structural support.

In her review of Guérir en Afrique. Promesses et transformations, Géraldine Vernerey-Kopp examines a collective volume edited by Alice Desclaux, Aïssa Diarra, and Sandrine Musso. The book investigates the concept of healing in various African settings through a multidisciplinary and constructivist lens. Spread over 14 chapters and four parts, the work explores healing as a therapeutic promise, a collective construction, an individual perception, and a global health issue. It highlights the complexities of medical pluralism, the interaction between biomedicine, traditional, and religious healing systems, and the challenge of defining “healing” in chronic or socially constructed illnesses. Although the notion of healing sometimes remains elusive, the book offers valuable insights to rethink healthcare systems and the role of local therapeutic knowledge in Africa and beyond.

From November 29 to 30, 2023, the Peace and Security Centre of Competence Sub-Saharan Africa of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) organized a regional workshop in Dakar focusing on crises in West Africa. Gathering academics, researchers, and civil society actors from eight countries, discussions addressed democratic, security, and institutional challenges in the region. Participants highlighted the negative impact of crises on political stability, governance, and regional integration, particularly within ECOWAS. The workshop emphasized the need to rethink democratic models, considering local contexts and the aspirations of populations. Recommendations were made to strengthen the rule of law, promote inclusive governance, and revitalize regional cooperation to build more resilient and legitimate institutions.

In this interview published by WATHI, Cameroonian lawyer and executive director of Internet Sans Frontières, Julie Owono, discusses the phenomenon of "infodemic" in Africa, marked by the rapid spread of misinformation and hate speech on social media platforms. She emphasizes that while these platforms mirror existing societal dysfunctions, their technical capabilities significantly amplify negative impacts by enabling instant, widespread dissemination of information. Owono highlights the legal gaps in many African countries regarding the regulation of social media and stresses the importance of enhancing digital sovereignty. She advocates for the positive use of social networks to promote constructive values and support communities. Finally, she calls for a balanced approach that combines regulation with the preservation of fundamental freedoms in cyberspace.

This article investigates the compounded vulnerabilities faced by deaf people in Burkina Faso, particularly in relation to health, education, and economic survival. Due to lack of adapted information and communication, especially on sexual health, deaf individuals—especially women are disproportionately exposed to risks such as unprotected sex, sexual violence, and clandestine abortions. The study draws on qualitative fieldwork conducted between 2014 and 2017, highlighting how many deaf individuals become involved in exploitative transnational begging networks. The research advocates for inclusive public policies that integrate sign language into education and healthcare systems, and stresses the urgent need to recognize the specific challenges faced by deaf people in West Africa. The article reveals the intersection of disability, gender, and poverty in shaping access to rights and services.

This study, conducted by the Regional Programme Political Dialogue in West Africa (PDWA) of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in collaboration with Promediation, analyzes the expansion of jihadist groups from the Sahel into the coastal countries of the Gulf of Guinea. Originating from Burkina Faso, where certain regions are beyond state control, these groups are moving southward, utilizing border national parks as strategic retreat areas and sources of funding. The study emphasizes the urgency for coastal countries to strengthen regional cooperation and implement tailored strategies to contain this growing threat.

The Afrikajom Center colloquium, held in Dakar from March 8–10, 2023, gathered experts, researchers, and political actors to reflect on the multifaceted crisis facing democracy in West Africa. Discussions highlighted growing authoritarianism (e.g., third terms, state capture, rollback of freedoms), weak institutions, corruption, and the exclusion of youth and women. Participants called for a democratic renewal rooted in African contexts: checks on presidential power, independent judiciary, civic participation, inclusive governance, constitutional reform, and strengthened accountability. The event emphasized the need to rethink governance amid security instability, military transitions, and institutional inefficiency. It advocated for rebuilding a generational social contract and supporting the rise of a more participatory, context-responsive African democracy fit for 21st-century challenges.

Since December 2021, Northern Benin has experienced escalating violence linked to violent extremist groups (VEOs), notably Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) and the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS). Initially confined to national parks, the violence has spread to populated areas. The report emphasizes that these threats primarily originate from neighboring countries—Burkina Faso, Niger, Togo, and Nigeria—rather than internal Beninese tensions. VEOs utilize Benin as a strategic buffer zone to evade regional military pressure and expand their influence. The report recommends enhanced regional coordination and cross-border programs to effectively address this threat.

This article analyzes the transformation of migration regimes in Central Sahel, especially in Niger, a country historically sidelined in migration studies. It details the rise of "transit" as a dominant migration regime from the 2000s, driven by international governance and EU externalization policies. Institutionalized through law (notably the 2015-36 anti-smuggling law), migration in Niger became increasingly criminalized and controlled. However, recent dynamics—including Sahelian crises (armed conflict, forced displacements), the 2023 repeal of migration laws, the growth of intra-African mobility recognized in Niger’s 2020 National Migration Policy, and the expansion of humanitarian infrastructure—challenge this framework. The Sahara now functions as a “trap space” for migrants, marked by constrained mobility, violence, and legal uncertainty. The article ultimately calls for a reconceptualization of transit not as passage or blockage, but as precarious, multi-directional movement shaped by both national policy shifts and regional instability.
