This cross-sectional study assesses the quality of maternal and newborn health care in Niger using a nationally representative sample of 110 public facilities (integrated health centres, district hospitals and mother–child hospitals) and 2,153 women. A quality-of-care tool, co-developed with the Ministry of Health, combined five components: health facility survey, partograph review, healthcare provider knowledge tests, client exit interviews, and direct observation of antenatal and postnatal consultations. Findings show important structural gaps, with incomplete access to electricity, water and transport, and uneven availability of key tests and medicines. Partographs are used for most deliveries but are often poorly completed. Screening and integrated management of preeclampsia, anaemia and infectious diseases (HIV, syphilis, tuberculosis, malaria) remain suboptimal, especially in postnatal care. While overt mistreatment is rare, communication gaps are frequent: results and diagnoses are not consistently explained to women. The authors call for targeted investments in supplies, competency-based training, respectful care and stronger integration of services at each contact with pregnant and postpartum women.

As of March 2022, only about 1% of Chad’s population was fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and no prior data existed on vaccine hesitancy in the country. This cross-sectional study in N’Djamena (August–October 2021) surveyed 508 adults—patients, community members and healthcare workers—using a 25-item questionnaire and an adapted WHO SAGE Vaccine Hesitancy Scale. Overall, 52% said they would accept a COVID-19 vaccine, with higher acceptance among patients (67%) than community members (44%) and healthcare workers (47%). The mean hesitancy score was 29/50, and more than one-third of respondents were classified as highly hesitant. Knowing someone who died from COVID-19, trusting the government, perceiving local healthcare worker support, having comorbidities and higher socioeconomic status (electricity at home) were all associated with lower hesitancy. Main concerns focused on side effects, efficacy, safety, the pharmaceutical industry and distrust of government. Qualitative analysis highlighted four themes: information, trust, clinical concerns, and misinformation/false beliefs.

The article examines the severe decline in press freedom across West Africa, highlighted by the 2025 RSF Press Freedom Index. Eleven of the region’s sixteen countries fell in the ranking, with dramatic drops in Guinea (-31 positions), Burkina Faso (-19), and Guinea-Bissau (-18). This regression reflects a shrinking civic space driven by military regimes, media suspensions, arrests of journalists, and state propaganda. Even countries without constitutional breakdowns, such as Senegal and Benin, face major challenges—economic collapse of the media sector in Senegal and restrictive digital legislation in Benin. In this context, organizations like the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) have become essential, providing training, protection, and visibility to journalists through initiatives such as WAMECA 2025. The article also warns about the surge of disinformation campaigns targeting the region and stresses the importance of public digital infrastructures to maintain a democratic, open, and reliable information space.

The article examines the effectiveness of defense and security forces in the Sahel and West Africa amid the rise of terrorist groups. Since the 1990s, structural weaknesses—poor equipment, limited training, and lack of modernization—have undermined national armies’ ability to confront asymmetric threats. Armed groups exploit these vulnerabilities, relying on insurgent and guerrilla tactics that outperform conventional military approaches. The document highlights varied national situations: the fragility of Mali and Burkina Faso, the relative preparedness of Niger, and Mauritania’s successful military reforms. It also emphasizes the shortcomings of foreign operations and the operational limitations of the G5 Sahel Joint Force. The Pastoral Monitoring Bulletin for Niger (August–September 2025) highlights an overall positive outlook for herders. Favorable rainfall significantly improved pasture and water availability, resulting in good livestock body condition. The paper examines whether greater accessibility to electronic money boosts financial inclusion in WAEMU countries over 2010–2022. Using annual data and Method-of-Moments Quantile Regression (MMQR) to tackle heterogeneity and endogeneity—plus IV-2SLS robustness checks—the authors find that both geographic and demographic penetration of e-money service points significantly increase financial inclusion. Two mechanisms drive the results: (1) expanding formal financial services (payments, transfers, savings) to rural and peri-urban areas by cutting transaction and travel costs; and (2) a catalytic effect that is stronger where initial inclusion is higher, deepening usage among already banked populations. Additional positive correlates include schooling, trade openness, mobile subscriptions, and internet access. Despite progress, WAEMU’s inclusion rate lags developing-country averages, implying a need to scale digital infrastructure, security/trust measures, and human-capital investments.

This study maps Senegal’s cattle and small ruminant trade network using 2020 sanitary certificates (LPS). Applying temporal network theory, it identifies areas most vulnerable to disease transmission, such as Foot and Mouth Disease. The findings show that livestock mobility—driven by climate, markets, and religious events (Tabaski, Grand Magal)—shapes the dynamics of disease spread. Static models tend to overestimate transmission speed, while temporal analysis highlights key “sentinel nodes” for early warning systems. Strengthening cross-border coordination and improving regular data collection are crucial for effective surveillance and control of transboundary animal diseases in West Africa.

In his WATHI column, Harouna Drabo warns about the growing threat of disinformation and foreign influence operations in West Africa, especially amid ongoing political instability and repeated coups. The region’s young, hyperconnected population has become a prime target for online manipulation campaigns. Drabo argues for strengthening the cognitive resilience of youth through education in critical thinking, source verification, and media literacy. He advocates a systemic, multi-stakeholder response involving the media, civil society, public institutions, and digital platforms. Regional organizations such as ECOWAS and the African Union should take the lead in building African digital sovereignty and negotiating with Big Tech to ensure fair content regulation and information security across the continent.

The paper “Most Western African migrants remain local and travel short distances” by Irene Tafani, Ola Ali, Rafael Prieto-Curiel, and Massimo Riccaboni investigates migration distances of over 60,000 individuals from eight West African countries (Senegal, Guinea, Gambia, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, and Chad) during 2021–2023. Using Random Forest and XGBoost machine-learning models on International Organization for Migration data, the study finds a bimodal distribution: most migrants move locally within 100 km, while a smaller share travels more than 3,000 km. Key determinants of migration distance include employment status, nationality, and motives for movement, with conflict-driven migration being especially long and unpredictable. The paper underscores that most mobility in West Africa is regional or short-distance and urges policy frameworks that integrate both local and long-range displacement dynamics.
