Most Western African migrants remain local and travel short distances 28/10/2025
Summary :
The paper “Most Western African migrants remain local and travel short distances” by Irene Tafani, Ola Ali, Rafael Prieto-Curiel, and Massimo Riccaboni investigates migration distances of over 60,000 individuals from eight West African countries (Senegal, Guinea, Gambia, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, and Chad) during 2021–2023. Using Random Forest and XGBoost machine-learning models on International Organization for Migration data, the study finds a bimodal distribution: most migrants move locally within 100 km, while a smaller share travels more than 3,000 km. Key determinants of migration distance include employment status, nationality, and motives for movement, with conflict-driven migration being especially long and unpredictable. Taking mental health into account in Sahel/West Africa crisis contexts 11/07/2025

This report investigates mental health challenges in crisis-affected contexts in Mali, Mauritania, and Chad. It highlights the impact of violence, poverty, gender inequalities, and forced displacement on mental well-being. The study explores the history of psychiatry, public policies, key actors, and presents field research in each country. Nonetheless, 74 % aspire to start their own business, and 17 % prefer public sector jobs . Despite challenges, 71 % believe the country is heading in the right direction, and 60 % have considered emigrating for economic reasons

Assessing the Impact of Climate Extreme Events and Conflicts on Internal Displacement in Burkina Faso 18/08/2025
Summary :
The article “Assessing the Impact of Climate Extreme Events and Conflicts on Internal Displacement in Burkina Faso”, published in January 2025 in the International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction, explores the dynamic links between climate extremes (floods, storms, droughts), conflicts (violent and non-violent, protests), and internal displacement in Burkina Faso from 2018 to 2022 . Findings reveal that in the short term, violent conflicts, demonstrations, and storms are associated with increased internal displacement. In the long term, only violent conflicts and storms remain significantly linked to displacement, while floods show no significant impact and the effect of demonstrations diminishes over time . The study underlines the need for effective conflict management and climate adaptation strategies to mitigate forced displacement.
