Forced Migration in Mali: A Historical Analysis of Displacements 06/05/2025
Summary :
Bréma Ely Dicko’s article traces the history of forced migration in Mali from the colonial era to the present. During colonization (1893–1960), forced labor, head taxes, and military conscription caused massive displacements. After independence, political repression, Tuareg rebellions, droughts, poverty, and institutional fragility intensified these movements. It highlights a sharp decline in irregular migration to Europe and the Arabian Peninsula due to stricter border control policies (notably in Libya, Tunisia, Morocco, and Mauritania). Assessing the Impact of Climate Extreme Events and Conflicts on Internal Displacement in Burkina Faso 18/08/2025

The article “Assessing the Impact of Climate Extreme Events and Conflicts on Internal Displacement in Burkina Faso”, published in January 2025 in the International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction, explores the dynamic links between climate extremes (floods, storms, droughts), conflicts (violent and non-violent, protests), and internal displacement in Burkina Faso from 2018 to 2022 . Findings reveal that in the short term, violent conflicts, demonstrations, and storms are associated with increased internal displacement. In the long term, only violent conflicts and storms remain significantly linked to displacement, while floods show no significant impact and the effect of demonstrations diminishes over time . The study underlines the need for effective conflict management and climate adaptation strategies to mitigate forced displacement.

Faced with aging populations and declining birth rates, industrialized countries are stepping up efforts to attract highly skilled foreign workers. Africa, with a median age of 19.7 and rapid demographic growth, has become a strategic labor pool. The author highlights reforms in Germany, France, the UK, Canada, Japan, and others to ease the entry of African talent. While this trend creates opportunities, it also accelerates brain drain, weakening Africa’s competitiveness, research, and innovation capacity. The piece concludes that African nations must build strong economies and create attractive jobs to retain their best-trained citizens, or risk continuing to fuel the development of other regions instead of their own.
