Demystifying the Influence of External Actors in Africa’s Technology Sector 06/06/2025
Summary :
This article examines Africa's structural dependence on external actors in its technology sector, particularly highlighting cyber vulnerability risks. The continent’s ICT infrastructure is largely dominated by Chinese and American firms, raising serious questions about digital sovereignty. The author presents Africa’s tech stack in five layers (apps, operating systems, consumer products, infrastructure, service providers) and details global actors’ market shares. Despite foreign influence, African governments and firms retain strategic agency, illustrated by emerging cybersecurity regulations and homegrown innovation. The article urges African states to prioritize cybersecurity, promote supplier diversity, and better adapt technology choices to local needs. Reducing overreliance on foreign actors and strengthening national capacities are framed as key to safeguarding Africa’s digital future.

Summary :
This work examines the pivotal role of political parties in modern democracy. Parties embody and structure electoral competition, develop programs, mobilize citizens, and uphold the separation of powers. Confronting a global "democratic recession"—marked by curtailed freedoms, concentrated authority, corruption, and weakened independent media—the author positions parties as potential bulwarks. In West Africa, civic space restrictions and military interventions threaten democratic processes; parties can reintroduce dialogue, articulate social interests, and offer political alternatives. The text stresses the need for genuine pluralism: without party diversity, democracy cannot exist. The book also compares international dynamics (India, Brazil, Europe, United States), showing that challenges are global, and advocates strengthening parties through transparent structures, ethical leadership, and autonomy to restore public trust.

Senegal: A Look at the First Year of Diomaye Faye’s Presidency and the PASTEF Party 11/06/2025
Summary :
One year after Bassirou Diomaye Faye (PASTEF) was elected President of Senegal, this report reviews key reforms undertaken. The year was marked by a transition period, the appointment of technocrats, and judicial reforms including the creation of a Financial Judicial Unit. Despite economic measures (price cuts, public finance audits, the launch of “Senegal 2050”), the high cost of living remains a challenge. In foreign policy, the government has asserted its sovereignty by initiating the closure of French military bases and renegotiating international agreements. However, public expectations remain high, particularly concerning gender parity, transparency, reduction of state spending, and youth employment. Political debate still overshadows substantive discussions on public policy reforms.

In Africa, Islamist Militant Groups Maintain a High Level of Lethality 16/05/2025
Summary :
In 2024, violence by Islamist militant groups in Africa caused an estimated 18,900 deaths, with the Sahel, Somalia, and the Lake Chad Basin most affected. The Sahel alone accounted for 55% of the total fatalities, notably in Burkina Faso, which has become the epicenter of insurgent activity. The JNIM coalition (linked to AQIM) is responsible for the majority of attacks. Alarmingly, more civilians were killed by Sahelian security forces and their Russian allies than by militants. Violence is rising in Niger, Togo, and Benin, while Somalia, despite a decrease in deaths, remains impacted by Al Shabaab and the Islamic State. Mozambique and North Africa have also seen renewed increases. The report warns that actual figures may be underreported due to media repression. The data illustrates the persistence and adaptability of militant operations across the continent.
