This report analyzes protection challenges in contexts of prolonged crises and fragility in West Africa. The study covers Sahel and Gulf of Guinea countries, facing growing instability. Summary :
The article entitled “Mali-Niger: climate change and conflicts form an explosive cocktail in the Sahel”, published by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in 2019, analyzes the interaction between climate change and intercommunity conflicts in Mali and Niger. Global warming is exacerbating historic tensions between herders and farmers, particularly arable land and making water resources more unpredictable. This situation worsens poverty, weakens public services and disrupts traditional livelihoods. Local populations, already facing underdevelopment, crime and violence, are pushed into difficult choices, such as migration or joining armed groups, to meet their needs. The ICRC highlights the need for a radically different approach to tackling these complex challenges in the Sahel.

Climate conflicts in the Sahel? When the fight against climate change fuels terrorism 30/01/2025
Summary :
The article "Sahel Climate Conflicts? When climate change fuels terrorism" by Luca Raineri, published in November 2020 by the European Union Institute for Security Studies (EUISS), analyzes the impact environmental policies on conflicts in the Sahel. The author criticizes the widespread idea that climate change is a direct cause of terrorism and conflict in the region. It demonstrates that certain environmental protection initiatives, poorly designed and imposed in an authoritarian manner, exacerbate social tensions and favor the establishment of jihadist groups.
