Analysis of the Suspension of USAID Activities in the Migration Sector in Mauritania 04/02/2026
Summary :
This policy brief examines the consequences of the withdrawal of USAID from migration-related activities in Mauritania in 2025. Although USAID was not the country’s largest donor, its exit weakened several key programmes supporting youth resilience, social cohesion, refugee protection and food security. The sudden suspension of funding led to the interruption of flagship projects such as Nafoore and Tamkeen, with significant impacts on local NGOs, UN agencies and municipalities, particularly in migration hotspots like Hodh El Chargui. The analysis highlights that USAID’s withdrawal occurred alongside strengthened European migration control policies, increasing the risk of human rights violations against migrants. While other donors (European Union, KOICA, Italian cooperation) have partially filled the gap, coordination remains limited and fragmented. The policy brief calls for diversification of funding sources, stronger national institutional capacities, and an integrated migration–development–protection approach to ensure the sustainability of migration governance and support mechanisms in Mauritania.

Assessing the Impact of Climate Extreme Events and Conflicts on Internal Displacement in Burkina Faso 18/08/2025

The article “Assessing the Impact of Climate Extreme Events and Conflicts on Internal Displacement in Burkina Faso”, published in January 2025 in the International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction, explores the dynamic links between climate extremes (floods, storms, droughts), conflicts (violent and non-violent, protests), and internal displacement in Burkina Faso from 2018 to 2022 . Findings reveal that in the short term, violent conflicts, demonstrations, and storms are associated with increased internal displacement. In the long term, only violent conflicts and storms remain significantly linked to displacement, while floods show no significant impact and the effect of demonstrations diminishes over time . The study underlines the need for effective conflict management and climate adaptation strategies to mitigate forced displacement.

Researching migration in West Africa: A systematic and reflexive review 12/11/2025
Summary :
This article offers a systematic and reflexive review of 656 publications (1958–March 2022) on intra-West African migration, sourced from Scopus using PRISMA and Mayring’s qualitative content analysis. It documents a sharp rise in output since the 2000s, with research clustered on Ghana and Nigeria, followed by Senegal, Mali, and Burkina Faso. Dominant topics are work/labour, social/family relations, and ethnicity/identity, while environment and climate change have recently gained traction. Studies focus more on outcomes than drivers of migration and tend to privilege urban destinations (the “urban trap”). Women and youth remain underrepresented, and translocal approaches are still uncommon. In terms of knowledge production, authors’ affiliations are predominantly in the US and Europe, reflecting postcolonial hierarchies; the authors call for decolonizing research agendas and strengthening West Africa-based scholarship.
