Cross-sectional study in Dakar (December 2021) among 301 adults (20–69 years) assessed ultra-processed food (UPF) intake using NOVA and quantified contributions to NCD-related critical nutrients. UPFs provided 17.4% of total energy, 43% of free sugars, 26.9% of total fat, 24.4% of sodium and 24% of potassium. Individuals in the highest UPF tercile consumed more total energy (~1,996 kcal), total fat, free sugars, potassium and protein than those in the lowest tercile. Greater UPF share was positively associated with exceeding recommended total fat intake (OR = 2.58; p = 0.002) and negatively associated with non-recommended intakes of potassium (OR = 0.01; p < 0.001) and protein (OR = 0.43; p = 0.009). Authors conclude UPFs substantially shape diet quality in urban Senegal and may be a major determinant of NCD incidence and prevalence.

This paper assesses Senegal’s mpox epidemiological surveillance from 14 July to 10 November 2024. Using a retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical design, it includes all cases sampled during the period. One hundred suspected cases were reported (~6 per million), all sampled, with zero confirmations. Alternative viral diagnoses were identified in 32% (mostly varicella-zoster) and 4 co-infections were recorded (12.5%). The median time from symptom onset to result availability was 7 days; the median consultation-to-result interval was 2 days, with longer delays in remote areas. Of 48 preparedness activities, 56.25% were completed and 10.42% were ongoing. System strengths included adaptation to the IDSR kit, multi-level staff training, surveillance procedures, focal points, a diversified reference-laboratory network, and electronic case notification (DHIS2/4S). The authors call for strengthened logistics and laboratory/response capacity in border and hard-to-reach regions to reduce delays and sustain readiness.

This article examines the trends and determinants of anemia among women of reproductive age in Mali using Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data from 2001 to 2018. Findings reveal persistently high anemia prevalence despite some fluctuations: a decrease between 2001 and 2006 followed by an increase in later years. Key associated factors include age, educational attainment, socioeconomic status, rural versus urban residence, and number of children. The analysis highlights the strong influence of poverty and unequal access to healthcare in sustaining the problem. This study examines the sharp decline in under-five mortality in Burkina Faso from 2010 to 2021, using Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) data and the Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition method. Findings indicate that under-five mortality dropped from 128 per 1,000 live births in 2010 to 48 per 1,000 in 2021. The decline is mainly explained (77%) by performance effects, including behavioral changes and the effectiveness of health policies, while demographic composition changes accounted for only 23%. Key factors include the reduction in uneducated mothers, wider use of mosquito nets, urbanization, and improved health behaviors among unemployed women. Nevertheless, significant disparities remain in high-risk regions such as the Sahel and the Southwest, where targeted interventions are essential to improve healthcare access and reduce inequalities. The study highlights the importance of integrating health policies with education, economic development, and sanitation for sustained progress.

This article by the We Are Water Foundation presents three concrete cases in the global effort toward universal sanitation: in Burkina Faso, Guatemala, and Kenya. In Burkina Faso, the foundation, together with UNICEF and local authorities, eliminated open defecation in the Sissili province using the CLTS approach, which empowers communities through awareness and self-driven action. In Lake Atitlán (Guatemala), Mosan developed a chemical-free, waterless toilet system that transforms waste into useful resources. In Kibera (Nairobi), UN-Habitat incorporated sanitation needs into a broader urban development plan involving roads, waste collection, and public spaces. The article stresses that access to safe toilets is a basic human right and a vital component of dignity, sustainability, and equitable development.

The UNODC report of January 2023 highlights the trafficking of medical products in the Sahel, including falsified, substandard and unauthorized medicines. Between January 2017 and December 2021, more than 605 tons of these products were seized during international police operations. The investigation reveals the involvement of various actors, including employees of pharmaceutical companies, civil servants, law enforcement officers, members of health agencies and street vendors, all motivated by financial gain. This trafficking seriously compromises public health and security in the region.
