Pastoral Surveillance Bulletin on Burkina Faso – August–September 2025 (No. 27) 18/12/2025
Summary :
The Pastoral Surveillance Bulletin No. 27 assesses pastoral conditions in Burkina Faso during August–September 2025, the peak of the rainy season. Based on field surveys and satellite data, the report highlights generally good availability of pasture and water resources, with vegetation cover ranging from 60% to 90%. Livestock mobility is reduced, and animal concentrations are moderate to high, particularly around agricultural areas. However, regional disparities remain, with localized shortages of pasture and water in parts of western and central Burkina Faso. Although cereal prices declined slightly and livestock prices improved marginally, terms of trade continue to be unfavorable for herders. The bulletin also reports persistent cattle theft and localized conflicts, especially in border areas. Overall, pastoral conditions have improved compared to the previous period, but the report emphasizes the need to strengthen pastoral resilience, improve conflict prevention mechanisms, and enhance support to pastoral communities.

The War of Narratives: Another Front in the Evolution of the Malian Conflict 26/12/2025

It begins with the media regulator’s decision to suspend LCI and TF1 (announced on 12 November 2025) and situates it within a broader tightening of media control since 2022, affecting both international and domestic outlets. The author highlights the rise of “patriotic” editorial framing and the growing influence of pro-government content creators (“videomans”) in shaping public opinion. Against the backdrop of attacks on fuel tankers, fuel shortages, and diplomatic warnings, he describes how official messaging clashes with sensational international coverage—especially speculation about Bamako’s possible fall—and with JNIM propaganda circulated on social media platforms. The piece also notes the emergence of counter-narratives (including from influencers on the ground) and concludes that this contested narrative ecosystem can shape perceptions of the crisis as much as events themselves.

The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission In Mali (MINUSMA) In Peacekeeping 28/11/2025
Summary :
This study assesses the impact of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) and identifies the challenges it faces. Using a descriptive methodology based on secondary data (books, journals, UN documents, online materials), the authors rely on content analysis and institutional theory. Findings show that MINUSMA has contributed to peacebuilding by enabling the return of many internally displaced persons, improving relative stability in northern Mali and reducing civilian casualties. The mission also supported the peace process culminating in the 2015 Peace and Reconciliation Agreement and assisted in organizing the 2013 and 2016 elections. However, MINUSMA is one of Africa’s most expensive peacekeeping missions (approximately USD 600 million annually) and among the deadliest due to high casualty numbers. Major challenges include authority conflicts, task allocation issues, insufficient personnel, logistical constraints and weaknesses in the implementation of peace agreements. The study recommends a full and credible implementation of the current peace agreement.

In Africa, unresolved conflicts are at the root of acute food insecurity 24/12/2025
Summary :
The article highlights unresolved armed conflicts as the primary driver of acute food insecurity in Africa. In 2025, a record 167 million Africans faced acute food insecurity, with over 130 million living in conflict-affected countries. More than 700,000 people are at risk of famine, mainly in Sudan, South Sudan, and Mali. Conflicts severely disrupt agricultural production, markets, transport systems, and humanitarian access, while triggering large-scale population displacement. The analysis shows that five countries—Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, Ethiopia, and South Sudan—account for nearly two-thirds of acute food insecurity on the continent. The article also stresses the regional spillover effects of conflicts, which strain neighboring countries and humanitarian response capacities. It concludes that famine is fundamentally a man-made catastrophe, with long-term economic and security consequences, undermining human capital, stability, and development prospects across Africa.
