In Africa, unresolved conflicts are at the root of acute food insecurity 24/12/2025
Summary :
The article highlights unresolved armed conflicts as the primary driver of acute food insecurity in Africa. In 2025, a record 167 million Africans faced acute food insecurity, with over 130 million living in conflict-affected countries. More than 700,000 people are at risk of famine, mainly in Sudan, South Sudan, and Mali. Conflicts severely disrupt agricultural production, markets, transport systems, and humanitarian access, while triggering large-scale population displacement. The analysis shows that five countries—Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, Ethiopia, and South Sudan—account for nearly two-thirds of acute food insecurity on the continent. The article also stresses the regional spillover effects of conflicts, which strain neighboring countries and humanitarian response capacities. It concludes that famine is fundamentally a man-made catastrophe, with long-term economic and security consequences, undermining human capital, stability, and development prospects across Africa.

Summary :
Nearly 25 million Nigerians – including some 6 million children under five – are at high risk of facing severe food insecurity between June and August 2023 unless urgent measures are taken. According to the October 2022 Cadre Harmonisé, this represents a significant increase from the 17 million people already threatened. The main drivers include ongoing armed conflicts (notably in the northeast), climate change, inflation and rising food prices. Extensive floods in the 2022 rainy season damaged more than 676,000 ha of farmland, further undermining food access. In the states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe (BAY), and in the north-west region (Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto), displaced and returning populations are particularly vulnerable. The article calls for immediate support to prevent a dramatic worsening of hunger.

The Impact of United Nations Peacekeeping Missions on Conflict Resolution in Sub-Saharan Africa 28/11/2025
Summary :
This article examines the real impact of United Nations peacekeeping missions on conflict resolution in Sub-Saharan Africa. Drawing on liberal institutionalism and conflict transformation theory, the study uses a qualitative, case-based approach relying on secondary data. It evaluates four major missions: MONUC/MONUSCO in the DRC, UNMISS in South Sudan, MINUSMA in Mali, and MINUSCA in the Central African Republic. Findings indicate mixed outcomes: although UN missions contributed to reducing open hostilities, protecting civilians, and facilitating humanitarian aid, they often failed to address root causes of conflict, foster political reconciliation, or establish sustainable peace. Key challenges include ambiguous mandates, limited resources, weak local ownership, and complex political environments. The study concludes that while UN peacekeeping remains essential for stabilisation, its effectiveness is constrained by structural and operational limitations. It recommends clearer mandates, stronger collaboration with the African Union, greater investment in peacebuilding, and enhanced local participation.

Summary :
The Pastoral Surveillance Bulletin of Senegal – October–November 2025 (No. 43) assesses pastoral conditions at the end of the rainy season and the onset of the cool dry season. It highlights a generally satisfactory availability of pasture and water resources in central, southern and eastern Senegal, contrasted with persistent fodder deficits in the northern regions (Saint-Louis, Louga, Matam). Bush fires, particularly widespread in Matam, Tambacounda and Kaffrine, have negatively affected vegetation regeneration. While the body condition of small ruminants remains largely good, that of large ruminants shows localized deterioration in deficit areas. Market analysis shows rising livestock prices, but persistently high cereal prices, especially rice, have resulted in unfavourable terms of trade for many pastoral households, notably in northern and eastern zones. The bulletin also stresses the limited and uneven support to the pastoral sector, calling for increased vigilance and better-targeted interventions to reduce vulnerabilities.
