The mirage of democratic transition in Chad 19/03/2025
Summary :
This article analyzes the ongoing democratic transition in Chad following the death of President Idriss Déby in 2021. While his son, Mahamat Déby, took power by circumventing the Constitution, the international community largely supported this succession, notably France, the European Union, and the United States. Despite peace agreements and a national dialogue, the transition has been marked by electoral reports and violence, such as the repression of the October 2022 protests. The author criticizes the complacency of international partners in the face of this political dynasty and emphasizes the urgent need for increasing diplomatic pressure. The opposition and certain rebel groups remain excluded from the process, making true democratization unlikely.

A Record Number of Forced Displacements in Africa Due to Conflicts 16/05/2025
Summary :
In 2024, the number of forcibly displaced people in Africa reached a record high, exceeding 45 million, a 14% increase from the previous year. The majority (over 34 million) are internally displaced. The Sudan emerged as the epicenter of the crisis, with 12.6 million displaced due to fighting between the army and Rapid Support Forces. Other severely affected countries include the DR Congo, Somalia, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Mali, and Cameroon. Primary causes include armed conflicts, state repression (notably in Eritrea and Rwanda), regional instability, and acute food insecurity. The report emphasizes the growing interlinkage between security and humanitarian crises and calls for greater international support to address the complex political and humanitarian challenges across the continent.

The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission In Mali (MINUSMA) In Peacekeeping 28/11/2025
Summary :
This study assesses the impact of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) and identifies the challenges it faces. Using a descriptive methodology based on secondary data (books, journals, UN documents, online materials), the authors rely on content analysis and institutional theory. Findings show that MINUSMA has contributed to peacebuilding by enabling the return of many internally displaced persons, improving relative stability in northern Mali and reducing civilian casualties. The mission also supported the peace process culminating in the 2015 Peace and Reconciliation Agreement and assisted in organizing the 2013 and 2016 elections. However, MINUSMA is one of Africa’s most expensive peacekeeping missions (approximately USD 600 million annually) and among the deadliest due to high casualty numbers. Major challenges include authority conflicts, task allocation issues, insufficient personnel, logistical constraints and weaknesses in the implementation of peace agreements. The study recommends a full and credible implementation of the current peace agreement.

Strengthening Psychosocial Wellbeing for Sustainable Peace 20/05/2025

This participatory research report, based on consultations with 1,155 individuals in Burkina Faso’s Cascades region, analyzes how armed conflict affects mental health, social cohesion, and livelihoods. It identifies four trauma-related psychological profiles: hyperactivity, avoidance, dissociation, and re-experiencing. The study highlights key triggering and sustaining factors, including social disruption, displacement, weakened livelihoods, and a loss of trust in institutions. Findings demonstrate the deep interconnection between mental health, social cohesion, and economic resilience. The report advocates for a holistic approach combining trauma prevention, community dialogue, and livelihood support. It also recommends using local cultural practices—such as intergenerational dialogue and communal farming—to help rebuild the social fabric and promote sustainable peace.
