The podcast addresses the release of shocking videos showing acts of extreme violence in the Solenzo region of western Burkina Faso on March 10 and 11, 2025. These videos, analyzed by Human Rights Watch, reveal the presence of local militias, including the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP), involved in summary executions of civilians, including women and children. The article emphasizes the need not to become accustomed to such atrocities and calls for collective awareness to combat the normalization of extreme violence, which represents an existential threat to Burkina Faso and the entire region.

Despite improvements in certain indicators, the Nigerien healthcare system remains precarious and dominated by a logic of "inhospitable medicine." This fragility is largely explained by the predominance of intervention mechanisms and public policies largely dictated and funded by international donors, often far removed from local dynamics and the operational realities of healthcare services. However, in this constrained context, certain structures stand out for the quality of the care they provide. They are unique in that they are led by committed local actors, true "shadow reformers," who design pragmatic and contextually adapted solutions to daily dysfunctions. Based on an ethnographic investigation, this article examines the logics of innovation at work in these marginal spaces of transformation. Drawing on operational research, it argues for recognition and increased support for these bottom-up reform dynamics, which are likely to constitute a credible alternative – or at least a necessary complement – to conventional approaches to improving health systems.

Despite some improvements, Niger's healthcare system remains fragile, characterized by "unwelcoming medical practices." Reform policies, often funded by international aid, struggle to adapt to the local realities of healthcare services. However, some facilities are providing better quality care thanks to "local reformers" who develop innovative solutions adapted to daily challenges, despite precarious working conditions. This article analyzes these local innovations using ethnographic data and proposes to explore "bottom-up" approaches to reforming the healthcare system, in addition to current strategies.

The Pastoral Surveillance Bulletin for Niger (No. 61, Dec. 2024 - Jan. 2025) provides a generally positive assessment of the pastoral situation. Pasture is widely available thanks to good rainfall, while bushfires have decreased compared to the previous period. Surface water remains sufficient in most sites, and livestock body condition is considered good to fair. However, several suspected cases of animal diseases (sheep pox, foot-and-mouth disease, etc.) have been recorded, although these have been brought under control by veterinary services. There has also been a slight increase in livestock thefts. Markets are open, with good availability of livestock feed. Livestock and grain prices are rising, but terms of trade have improved, favoring pastoralists. The bulletin recommends continued vaccination, awareness-raising, and monitoring of pastoral resources.

Action Against Hunger's 2024 regional report assesses biomass production in the Sahel and West Africa. Following a poor rainy season in 2023, 2024 was marked by abundant rainfall, particularly in the central Sahel, leading to exceptional biomass yields in Niger, Chad, and Burkina Faso. In contrast, coastal countries and some agricultural areas of Mali, Senegal, and southern Chad recorded moderate to low biomass production. Despite sufficient overall resource availability, access is hampered by insecurity, restrictions on livestock mobility, and pressure on grazing land. The report highlights the importance of sustainable resource management, support for pastoralists, and facilitating cross-border transhumance before the 2025 dry season.

In the Madagali region of Adamawa State in northeastern Nigeria, approximately 250 people with disabilities experience severe discrimination, depriving them of access to essential services, opportunities, and humanitarian aid. This exclusion results in accumulated psychological distress, including feelings of fear and rejection. With support from the United Nations Humanitarian Fund for Nigeria (NHF) and in partnership with the Center for Advocacy, Transparency, and Accountability Initiative (CATAI), the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) implemented psychosocial support, advocacy, and awareness-raising activities to promote the inclusion of these people. Psychosocial support sessions, including psychoeducation and support groups, were organized to improve participants' emotional well-being and social integration. The DRC also provided transportation support to facilitate access to essential services. These initiatives have enabled participants to regain self-confidence and integrate more fully into the community, thus contributing to a more inclusive society in Madagali.

The report, "Humanitarian Protection in the Liptako-Gourma Region," is the result of research conducted between 2020 and 2022 by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), and their local partners. This study focuses on the Liptako-Gourma region, located on the border between Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, an area marked by a continued deterioration in security since 2015. The main objective was to assess the effectiveness of humanitarian protection programs and their interaction with local protection systems. Based on qualitative and quantitative data collected in the North and Sahel regions of Burkina Faso, Mopti in Mali, and Tillabéri in Niger, the research highlighted the complementarity between humanitarian protection mechanisms and local structures. It highlights the importance of integrating traditional protection systems to strengthen the effectiveness of humanitarian interventions.

This article analyzes the ongoing democratic transition in Chad following the death of President Idriss Déby in 2021. While his son, Mahamat Déby, took power by circumventing the Constitution, the international community largely supported this succession, notably France, the European Union, and the United States. Despite peace agreements and a national dialogue, the transition has been marked by electoral reports and violence, such as the repression of the October 2022 protests. The author criticizes the complacency of international partners in the face of this political dynasty and emphasizes the urgent need for increasing diplomatic pressure. The opposition and certain rebel groups remain excluded from the process, making true democratization unlikely.
