Trans-Saharan Trade Over Time and Political Fluctuations 16/01/2025
Summary :
This article examines the historical evolution of trans-Saharan trade in the Central Sahara, shaped by a harsh environment, colonization, and recent political events. Initially vibrant and unrestricted, trade was limited by colonial impositions of arbitrary borders and by post-independence state controls. Since the 1990s, commercial and informal flows have intensified, driven by globalization, Algerian subsidies, smuggling, and trafficking (drugs, weapons, migrants). The Libyan and Malian crises since 2011 have disrupted these flows, escalating cross-border criminality and arms trafficking. The authors highlight the increasing role of parallel economies and the weakness of states in managing borders.

Summary :
The article explores the geopolitics of terrorism in Africa, analyzing the challenges and responses proposed by African states and their international partners. It highlighted the rapid adaptation of terrorist groups such as AQIM, MUJAO and Boko Haram, faced with often ineffective strategies. Initiatives such as the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) are struggling to gain traction due to problems of coordination, financing and foreign influences that prioritize their strategic interests. Better governance, enhanced cooperation and comprehensive approaches are essential to counter the rise of terrorism, as is the fight against its financing and support. The article calls for a melting down of African armies and the establishment of multidimensional strategies, integrating the ideological, educational and economic aspects.

Summary :
This article analyzes the historical, political, and economic evolution of borders in the Saharo-Sahelian region, shaped by colonization, Tuareg rebellions, border disputes, and illegal flows. Borders, often arbitrary and poorly controlled, have become sites of rents for local and international actors. In pre-colonial times, this region was a transit area without barriers. Colonization imposed rigid borders, disrupting local dynamics. Today, trafficking (drugs, weapons, migrants) thrives, making borders porous and uncontrollable. Jihadist movements also redefine borders through their advances and retreats. The author emphasizes that Saharo-Sahelian borders remain economic, political, and geostrategic tools while symbolizing regional instability.

The article "Central Mali: Issues and Dangers of a Neglected Crisis" analyzes the situation in the central regions of Mali, particularly Mopti and Segou, where the Fulani community expresses social and political demands that are often reduced to security issues. Faced with this marginalization, some join jihadist groups that promise justice, protection, and economic opportunities. The study, based on community surveys, highlights the root causes of the regional malaise and suggests avenues for a conflict prevention strategy, highlighting the fragility of this area and the urgency of increased attention from Malian decision-makers.
