Rethinking disability in Senegal: Analysis of norms and discourses on disability 06/03/2025
Summary :
The report “Rethinking Disability in Senegal: Analysis of Norms and Discourses on Disability” by Dr. Annick Nganya Tchamwa and Pr Abdou Salam Fall analyzes the social representations of disability in Senegal through a qualitative study using Nvivo software. It highlights the social and cultural constructions that influence the perception of disability, often assimilated to mystical beliefs or transgressions of social norms. The study also explores forms of discrimination and stigmatization, particularly in religion, family, access to social services and employment. People with disabilities face many obstacles, including institutional exclusion and difficulties in social and marital integration. However, the article also highlights the resilience strategies put in place, such as self-acceptance and community participation.

How can we improve the functioning of health systems for the benefit of populations? 26/02/2025
Summary :
The article analyzes health systems in West Africa and proposes actions to improve their efficiency. He noted the progress made, although hampered by conflicts and health crises like Ebola. States are struggling to finance their health systems, leading to inequalities in access to care. WATHI recommends five areas of action: strengthening prevention, training and better distributing health professionals, improving sector financing, optimizing the daily management of health infrastructures and developing research and regional cooperation. Emphasis is placed on the need for citizen and political commitment for sustainable reforms, taking into account the limited resources of the countries concerned.

Summary :
Over the past three decades, participation in higher education in sub-Saharan Africa has grown at an accelerating pace. However, enrollment rates remain modest compared to other developing regions. This growth has not kept pace with population growth and pent-up demand for higher education. Data on participation by social or ethnic group are limited, making it difficult to assess the equitable distribution of this expansion. Studies indicate that the "massification" of higher education has not yet occurred in the region, with significant variations by gender, geography, and ethnicity. The diversification of higher education landscapes, marked by the elevation of often under-resourced public institutions to university status and the consolidation of a large and disparate private sector, raises questions about the quality of education. Accumulated student resistance to tuition fee increases or other reforms may reflect tensions between new groups seeking access to higher education as a means of social mobility and elites aiming to control the transformation of this sector to consolidate their ascendancy.
