The Impact of United Nations Peacekeeping Missions on Conflict Resolution in Sub-Saharan Africa 28/11/2025
Summary :
This article examines the real impact of United Nations peacekeeping missions on conflict resolution in Sub-Saharan Africa. Drawing on liberal institutionalism and conflict transformation theory, the study uses a qualitative, case-based approach relying on secondary data. It evaluates four major missions: MONUC/MONUSCO in the DRC, UNMISS in South Sudan, MINUSMA in Mali, and MINUSCA in the Central African Republic. Findings indicate mixed outcomes: although UN missions contributed to reducing open hostilities, protecting civilians, and facilitating humanitarian aid, they often failed to address root causes of conflict, foster political reconciliation, or establish sustainable peace. Key challenges include ambiguous mandates, limited resources, weak local ownership, and complex political environments. The study concludes that while UN peacekeeping remains essential for stabilisation, its effectiveness is constrained by structural and operational limitations. It recommends clearer mandates, stronger collaboration with the African Union, greater investment in peacebuilding, and enhanced local participation.

In Africa, unresolved conflicts are at the root of acute food insecurity 24/12/2025
Summary :
The article highlights unresolved armed conflicts as the primary driver of acute food insecurity in Africa. In 2025, a record 167 million Africans faced acute food insecurity, with over 130 million living in conflict-affected countries. More than 700,000 people are at risk of famine, mainly in Sudan, South Sudan, and Mali. Conflicts severely disrupt agricultural production, markets, transport systems, and humanitarian access, while triggering large-scale population displacement. The analysis shows that five countries—Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, Ethiopia, and South Sudan—account for nearly two-thirds of acute food insecurity on the continent. The article also stresses the regional spillover effects of conflicts, which strain neighboring countries and humanitarian response capacities. It concludes that famine is fundamentally a man-made catastrophe, with long-term economic and security consequences, undermining human capital, stability, and development prospects across Africa.

The Pastoral Surveillance Bulletin No. 27 assesses pastoral conditions in Burkina Faso during August–September 2025, the peak of the rainy season. Based on field surveys and satellite data, the report highlights generally good availability of pasture and water resources, with vegetation cover ranging from 60% to 90%. Livestock mobility is reduced, and animal concentrations are moderate to high, particularly around agricultural areas. However, regional disparities remain, with localized shortages of pasture and water in parts of western and central Burkina Faso. Although cereal prices declined slightly and livestock prices improved marginally, terms of trade continue to be unfavorable for herders. The bulletin also reports persistent cattle theft and localized conflicts, especially in border areas. Analysis of Narrative Dualism during the Attempted Coup in Benin 30/12/2025
Summary :
The article examines how the December 7, 2025 attempted coup in Benin became a narrative struggle between opposing interpretations of the event. The Military Committee for Refoundation (CMR) aimed to promote a revolutionary narrative by occupying the national television and denouncing deteriorating security conditions. In response, the Beninese government quickly crafted a counter-narrative, led by the Minister of the Interior, that downplayed the incident as an isolated mutiny and employed crisis communication strategies to reassure the public and stabilize perceptions. The article highlights the role of framing in shaping public understanding and explains that the government’s rapid and controlled communication neutralized the putschists’ messaging. Despite the failure of the attempted coup, the underlying causes of the crisis remain unresolved, and the article argues that future communication should focus on reforms to address grievances and prevent similar challenges to constitutional order.
