Summary :
The February–March 2025 Pastoral Monitoring Bulletin, published by Action Against Hunger, highlights key challenges for pastoralism in the Sahel. This transition period between the cold and hot dry seasons is characterized by the drying up of temporary water points and widespread bushfires that have reduced forage availability. Nevertheless, pasture remains generally sufficient. Seasonal transhumance movements are mainly downward, but abnormal or forced movements linked to insecurity are also reported. The body condition of livestock ranges from fair to satisfactory, although suspected disease outbreaks are noted. Cereal and livestock prices are mostly rising, but terms of trade remain unfavorable for herders in many areas. Livestock theft, limited market access, and the arrival of refugees are further complicating conditions in certain regions.

Multisectoral Surveillance Bulletin - Timbuktu-Taoudénit (April–May 2025) 04/07/2025

This ACF bulletin assesses the multisectoral situation in the regions of Timbuktu and Taoudénit (Mali) from April to May 2025. It highlights a marked deterioration in food security, driven by ongoing insecurity, population displacement, rising food prices, and low agricultural production. The report also signals increasing water stress, rising cases of acute malnutrition, reduced access to healthcare and education services, and violations of the basic rights of displaced populations. Despite ongoing humanitarian responses, needs remain critical, particularly in the Goundam and Gourma-Rharous districts. China Expands Its Influence in Africa Through Increased Security Engagements 04/07/2025

In this article, Paul Nantulya examines China’s growing security footprint in Africa, reflecting the Communist Party’s global ambitions. Through the 2025–2027 FOCAC action plan, Beijing expands military cooperation: training programs, joint drills, arms exports, and infrastructure support. Countries such as Tanzania, Senegal, Kenya, and Namibia are central partners. While China offers affordable weaponry and avoids political conditionality, its governance model—focused on regime stability—raises concerns. Chinese arms have ended up in the hands of militants, and surveillance technology is often used to suppress political dissent. Though many African governments see Chinese support as strategic, civil societies fear increased authoritarian tendencies. China's security engagement is expected to continue growing, underscoring the need for transparency, stronger export controls, and civic oversight to ensure it aligns with citizens’ interests.
